Prayer: According to Scripture
Prayer was on the disciples minds. They saw how God always answered Jesus. They wanted to know His secret. He taught them with these words. “When you pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.” Luke 2:2 It is plain to see the reason for our prayers. They are so that our Father’s will is done on earth. That begs the question; How can we know God’s will?
You will know God’s will when you seek it. Jesus said, “I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father which has sent me.” John 5:30 Our prayer is often for what we want. Instead we should be seeking God’s will and then praying. “Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.” John 8:47 He has spoken and revealed His will through His Son. Jesus’ words and works were not His own, He did His Father’s will.
God has not changed. Jesus promised that, ‘Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” John 14:12-14 It seems that we are the ones that have to change. I heard a sermon today that pretty much sums up the problem. I recommend that you watch it if prayers seem to go unanswered.
God has shown us through His Son what his will is. Doubt His will, or doubt that He will answer, and our prayers will go unanswered. James 1:5-8 If we do not ask God we will not have an answer. Or if we ask with the wrong motives our prayer will be in vain. James 4:2-3 Husbands hinder their own prayer when inconsiderate and disrespectful to their wife. 1 Peter 3:7 Unfortunately that is often the case in the church. Do not think a selfish and uncaring heart will be heard. Isaiah 58 Know that unanswered prayer is our portion until there is humble repentance. Amos
We can imagine all kinds of reasons why pray is not answered. But wouldn’t it be better to believe the truth? Jesus truly wants us to pray as He does. That is the only way we can pray in His Name. Conform to God’s will and watch as the Father is glorified in His Son.
