A New Promise.
Have you read the Holy Scriptures long enough to have your favorite chapters? Mine are Jeremiah 31 and Luke 22. Jeremiah was the Old Testament prophet who recorded God’s promise of redemption for all of the families of Israel through a New Covenant. Luke brings us to the Passover Table where Jesus declares Himself to be the blood sacrifice for the fulfillment of God’s promised New Covenant.
The Old Promise was Broken.
Israel broke the Old Covenant, the one that had God’s Law. That is why God promised to make a new one, a covenant that could not be broken. The New Covenant would be all of God’s doing and not dependent on man.
This is His Promise: “Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.” It will be different and “not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,’ declares the Lord.
But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,’ declares the Lord, I will put My Law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God and they shall be My people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying , ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
Loving God and Praising Him because of His Promise.
These are my favorite verses because I thought there was something I had to do in order to be saved. All that I brought into my life was turmoil and depression. The only work that we can do is to believe in Jesus whom God has sent. (John 6 28-29) Aren’t you glad you can depend on God to do as He promised? It cost Him dearly to keep His word, “I will.”
