The oldest son was Ishmael.
The son of Abraham’s flesh was born of Hagar, an Egyptian servant to Sarah. You probably know the story about a wife undermining her husband’s faith. God made a promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations. They were getting old and no kids. So, she convinced Abraham to impregnate Hagar. Sarah gets her child and Abraham gets his son, Ishmael. But he wasn’t the one God had in mind.
When God says something it’s as good as done. It has to do with the integrity of His Word which He places above His Name. In God’s time, a one-hundred year old man held the promised son in his hands. God’s choice was Isaac.
Makes no sense to argue about the ways of a sovereign God. Right from the start God wanted us to know that He does the choosing. Things will go according to His plans. He is the one who knew the end from the beginning.
The children of Ishmael
Abraham asked God that Ishmael should live under God’s blessing. ‘Then God said, ‘Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you this time next year.” (Genesis 17:19-22) True to His word, Ishmael was fruitful and “greatly increased in numbers” inhabiting the Middle-East.
The words on the sign are telling.
The photo was taken at the foot of the hill leading to the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth.
“Say, ‘We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims (submissive) to Him.”
Pray for the children of Ishmael.
Only our Father can reveal His Son, Jesus, to hearts that are unable to spiritually discern the difference. Jesus is more than a prophet. He is God. May the children of Ishmael be blessed with the light of Jesus our Lord.
