Gifts

The best gifts are the ones that come from heaven. They are spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are not naturally perceived, precisely identifiable nor can they be measured.  These gifts are intangible, yet can be recognized by the body of Christ. Their purpose is to be used in the building of Christ church. They are gifts given by Christ to men.

“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the holy ones for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13)

We have not all attained to these four purposes of God. There are only twelve apostles, besides Paul, and they have accomplished God’s purpose, but the other ministry gifts remain realities “until we all attain” to His high calling. I find great comfort in the words of Jesus when He said, “My sheep hear My voice, I know them and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27-28)

I am not concerned that any of Jesus’ sheep will be deceived by false prophets claiming to be what they are not. And false teachers are easily recognized by their doctrines that divide the body of Christ. But I am concerned that so many sheep are wandering on their own. We cannot be equipped and built up in the unity of the faith, obtaining to the fullness of Christ, without our commitment to a Biblical fellowship where God’s gifts preside. The internet is not a substitute for a living relationship as part of the body.

We are to be “fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, (that) causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself  in love.” (John 4:16) In other words, YOU are needed.
