Burdens too heavy to carry.
Our world is in crisis. There were as many opioid overdose deaths in this country last year as all the U.S. deaths in the Viet Nam war. Men and women were overwhelmed by our civilization and became indifferent to life and death.
It’s not going to get better. The crisis will build as men continue to demand their own way. The consequences will multiply adding to the burdens of life. The problem is pride. Pride that can be seen as the child pushes your hand away saying, “I can do it!” And pride matures in its attempt to control its world. Through folly, Pride winds up carrying the weight of its world or is crushed under it.
Christ’s yoke is the solution.
“Come unto Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
When we think of a yoke we envision it placed on a beast of burden used to control its movements. What is Christ’s yoke that we the “weary and heavy-laden” are invited to put on? Humility! Without it we will never be His disciple. Rest will elude us as we continue to carry the weight of Pride’s burdens.
Someday we will be like Jesus, “gentle and humble in heart,” when we have finished undoing our old habits of self-preservation by relying on God instead. The amazing benefit? “REST FOR YOUR SOUL?”
