Borrowing from Daniel.
The quote on Bethlehem’s wall are the words Martin Luther King spoke while at the Berlin wall. “Here are God’s children on both sides of the wall, and no man-made barrier can destroy this fact,” King shouted. “With this faith we will be able to tear out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.” He was alluding to the dream God gave to King Nebuchadnezzar and interpreted by Daniel.
In his dream Nebuchadnezzar saw a great image representing world powers that began with the kingdom of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar “watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” (Daniel 2:34-35)
Finally, the walls that have divided the nations will be no more. For there will be no need. The nations will dwell together in peace. From heaven will come “the Shepherd, the stone of Israel.” (Genesis 49:24)
“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the LORD. “Many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you. And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem.” (Zechariah 2:10-12)
Until then men suffer under the governments of this dark age. The wall of Bethlehem would offer a greater hope than Dr. King’s quote, if Isaiah’s word’s were written in their place.
“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will be on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forever more. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
Come, Lord Jesus, come.
