“And the tempter came and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ But He answered and said, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” (Matthew 4:3-5 NASB)
If there was bread that would extend your life, would you want to know more. “Where can I buy some? How much will it cost?” It is free if we believe and obey every word that comes from “the mouth of God.” Jesus is God and He said many things. Some were commands, rules of His kingdom. Some tell us what God’s kingdom is like, comparisons with things we know. He didn’t come to give advice, He came to save us.
The tempter didn’t argue, he knows what “every word” means. The Creator was telling His enemy truth for us to hear. God provides the Bread of Life, it is His word which is Spirit. If you’re hungry freely eat? If you’re feeling faint and weak, that changes when believing every word. Especially Jesus’ words that are hard to hear. “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” (Matthew 6:14-15 NASB) Wow! what do you think about that absolute truth? God is not a wimp. He endured pain and shame to save sinners like me. Sinners who forgive.
“I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the gods.
I will bow down toward Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.
On the day I called, You answered me;
You made me bold with strength in my soul.” (Psalm 138:1-3 NASB)
