“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13 NASB)
When we see Jesus, because of God’s grace, we will have realized our present hope. Peter is telling us to prepare our “minds for action,” keep an aware spirit and completely focus on our hope which is the grace of God. That will keep us out of trouble while in this world of sin. It doesn’t hurt to be obedient, quite the opposite. God knows what’s best, but we seem to struggle holding on to what is not best. That is our old nature. We are told to leave it behind.
To prepare our minds for action is to be ready. Ready for when we meet Jesus, and He talks about our faithfulness. We are not going to be desiring that conversation unless we keep a sober spirit, one that is attentive to the Holy Spirit. Obedience is so worth it! Both now and later. We can hardly imagine the kinds of rewards our King will give to His faithful servants.
Obedience is far more than for the sake of rewards. It is the only way to express the depth of our gratitude. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15 NASB)
Lord Jesus, increase our passion. Amen.
