A message for those who are weary and burdened. (Matthew 11:28 NASB)
“Jesus answered them and said, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.‘” (John 6:26-27 NASB)
They followed Jesus for the wrong reasons. I suppose many still do today, yet consider themselves to be Christians. We can do the things Christians do, (attend worship services, Bible studies, and give of our time and money) but our labor and sacrifices are in vain if we think these things will save us. Jesus corrected their error by pointing out the better way. They wanted to know what they had to do.
“Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” (John 6:28-29 NASB)
This is it, the only work that is not in vain is believing in Jesus Christ. When we do, instead of hoping that those other things will save us, we will finally experience salvation. THEN WHAT WE DO, BE IT WORSHIP OR STUDY OR GIVING OR OBEDIANCE, IS FROM A PURE HEART OF LOVE AND THANKSGIVING FOR WHAT WE HAVE RECIEVED. We can never earn God’s amazing gift of grace, eternal life, so stop trying! Simply believe the One God sent. That will please the Father. (Hebrews 11:6)
