Knowing the Time

“Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:11-12 NASB)

Jerusalem’s temple was still standing when Paul wrote to believers telling them to wake up. He was conscious of time. Most of us count birthdays and anniversaries as the things we celebrate or have marked our memory. Births and deaths, but not Paul. He was concerned about the late hour and sleeping Christians almost two thousand years ago.

They were believers and still participated in what Paul called “deeds of darkness.” Obviously, anything a believer in Jesus should not be doing. Any action expressing their fallen nature. The lusts of the flesh.

“Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.” (Romans 13:13-14 NASB)

This is the hour to awaken from sleep and keep our eyes open to truth. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ!
