Zechariah, serving as priest of God to Israel, prophesied the coming of God’s promised Messiah, and spoke these words to his son, John.
“And you, child, also will be called the prophet of the Most High;
For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways.
To give His people the knowledge of salvation
By the forgiveness of their sins,
Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:76-79 NASB)
Prepare His ways? How? Through God’s message of repentance, for the promise of one like Moses was coming. He was coming to save His people. But not without repentance. The ones who repented acknowledged their sin and turned to God believing His prophet, the one we call John the Baptist. The rest? They were damned without repentance. I write, so that others experience the tender mercies of God.
The vail is lifted and darkness dispelled by the light of God’s word. Praise God for the knowledge of salvation and the forgiveness of sins.
