“In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘ This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. (Luke 22:20)
I am old, but not too old. Just old enough to know how blessed we are, living in the Light of God’s Spirit. It did not happen all at once, pride and flesh held me back. There were lessons, and I am a slow learner. Jesus never let go of me as I struggled trying to comprehend.
If I had been born under the Law of Moses my community would have stoned me as a rebellious child. That was the severity of God’s Old Covenant that man agreed to obey. I could not be happier now that God has made a New Covenant.
Welcome to the most wonderful thing God decided to do for helpless human beings. First of all, He gave us a Priest who sacrificed Himself. No priest would have sacrificed themselves under the Old Covenant, but Jesus did for us. “THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER.'” (Hebrews 7:21, Psalm 110:4)
Jesus is Priest of the Most High God who lives forever. “Therefore He is able also to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25) We can now draw near to God, through Jesus, as we experience the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. “I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS. AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.” (Hebrews 8:10, Jeremiah 31:33)
We no longer walk in darkness ignorant of the commandments to love God and our neighbor. His holy law is within us. And because it is, we sense the Spirit’s grieving when we disobey, and experience the loss of peace and joy. There is no avoiding the One who says, “I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”
I do not have to tell you to “Know the Lord.” If you believe in Jesus, the Son of God, you know Him and have experienced that what I have said is true. Thank God we have a Priest who lives to intercede for us, when in our weakness we fall. “FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE.” (Hebrews 8:12, Jeremiah 31:34)
Father, we cannot thank You enough for Your New Covenant and Jesus our Priest. Your love for us has provided all that we need as we draw near to You. And as we do the Holy Spirit continues His work in us, for that is Your will. Worthy are You of our love and praise, for You came to find Your lost sheep. You found me. Thank you.
